London
Here we are now in London, Ontario. I'm sitting in front of the fire in the O'Connor house in a residential area. Everyone else has settled down or is settling down. I should get to bed soon, too, because tomorrow I'm going to an Eastern European folk dance class in the morning with Ruth, Theresa's sister. Ruth is actually how I came into this whole clan. I met her about 5 years ago in California when she came out there with our mentor, Frey Faust. Through her I met Kevin the following year when he came out to also study with Frey. The rest, for me, is history.
We had a fantastic final show in Toronto. A packed house on a sunny Sunday afternoon, with the all important reporter from the Globe present with her two young kids. They loved the show, and will do their best to get a review in the paper, although it looks like it won't make it in before we finish here this weekend. Oh, well. I like to think we're in it for the long haul, so hopefully we'll at least get something in eventually. The important thing is that we are being well received by those who have come, and people are very encouraging. We love doing this show and being together, so hopefully it's just the beginning!
After the performance we did a quick strike, went out for Korean barbecue, an educational as well as tasty experience for all, and then hit the road, arriving late last night. We spent all day in the old Imax Theater here where we will be performing, and it is really quite an interesting space, totally different from where we've been. It's seats several hundred, and the seats all have cup holders. There is glittery silver mylar hanging on either side which we are trying to figure out how we will cover up, and the rigging is a challenge as the space has never been used for aerial. We have two days to get it all set up and get up to speed here. thursday we'll have hundreds of teenagers from a local school, set up by Kevin's mom Margie who pulled many strings to make it happen, and then shows Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. Kevin had an interview this morning for the local paper and with family and friend connections, hopefully we'll have some full houses! It's so cool to finally see where Ruth, Kevin and Theresa grew up. I've been hearing about it for years. It's all been quite an adventure!! Terry and I were talking the other day about what we imagine would be our ideal, dream work situation or project, and we both agreed that working on this piece has pretty much been it. For me it's been a dream come true in many ways - I've gotten to teach and co-create in an aesthetic that I love working in, with people I love working with, on a project I really believe in. Now if we can just make that world tour happen!!

Toronto part II
After nearly three weeks in T-dot, we had our first sold out house tonight. Our last saturday night, and tomorrow is our last show in Toronto. It's going to be hard to sleep tonight, because we usually stay up until 3am at least, but tomorrow we have a matinee.... and a supposedly important one because a reviewer from Canada's top newspaper will be coming to see the show! kevin called the dance reviewer at The Globe and Mail 20 times, and she finally got back to him.
After a discouraging couple of weeks of low attendance, the word is finally spreading, and there are glimmers of excitement. A wealthy family who runs a foundation for the arts attends, and rumors are they liked the show. A journalist or 2 makes it in, and pre-sale ticket levels increase. Starting to take off, maybe?
We leave for London directly after the show tomorrow, so we won't find out this time around. But a positive review would be a substantial step in the right direction.
Otherwise, life is full and engaging and satisfying. We are lazy during the day, and but we work a bit fine-tuning and improving the show everyday, and we get energized just long enough for our hour of high-octane performance, then we crash, eat together, play silly games, take street cars, stay up late and fall asleep to do it all again the next day.
I'm going to miss these guys like limbs! We've definitely become a bit of a family. A decently functioning one, no less.
